Sustainable nut supply? It’s possible.

At ofi, sustainability is at the heart of our operations. And when it comes to nuts, we know each variety and type—from almonds to hazelnuts—brings its own set of challenges and opportunities. A one-size-fits-all solution simply won’t work, so we’re dedicated to finding tailored, creative solutions. Our commitment to sustainability is woven into our actions, strategies a...

Making processing more sustainable

Processing is a vital stage in traceable nut supply chains. Around the world, our facilities process your nut order to the desired specification, maintaining the highest standards of food safety. But other quality standards need maintaining too - including the welfare of people who work in our facilities and the communities they support. The way nuts are processed has other implications for sustainability. For instance, 25% of the energy used in our Vietnam processing facilities is renewable. By 2030, our aim is to process 30% of our cashews using green energy. And we aim to give 100% of people working in our almond factories access to development opportunities. You can read about our other ambitious goals in our Nut Trails report.

Supply chain excellence

We’ve invested in our supply chain sustainability strategy by identifying three nuts to focus on first. We published our Cashew, Almond and Hazelnut Trail strategies in 2021, outlining a clear roadmap to supply these ingredients in more sustainable and creative ways, from farm to factory. These are in line with the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals and ofi’s commitment to deliver naturally good, sustainable ingredients.

Now we’re able to share our work so far and how it’s impacting lives, in our Nut Trails impact report 2023. This brings to life over 12 months’ worth of impact data, which includes training 100% of seasonal hazelnut workers in our sustainability programs on gender equality, labor rights and children’s rights, and distributing over US$1million in premiums to cashew farmers.

The report charts our progress in:

  • Helping farmers prosper

  • Protecting the rights of children and workers

  • Promoting regenerative agriculture

These choices are guided by and contribute to ofi’s overarching sustainability strategy Choices for Change.

An opportunity to do good, and grow

Sustainable sourcing isn’t just about caring for the planet—it’s a catalyst for building trust, creating opportunities and delivering dependable quality to our customers.

Our own consumer research pinpointed nuts as a popular choice in formulating plant-based products, with cashews, hazelnuts and almonds associated with being tasty, natural and healthy.

We also know consumers are motivated by traceability, with 75% of those we surveyed saying they are willing to pay more for a sustainable product.

Our extensive farmer programs and innovation capabilities mean that you’ll be in a strong position to help your customers satisfy this appetite. That's the sustainability boost. It helps the planet, communities and businesses.
