Spices that do good

We know that sustainability matters—not just for the planet, but for businesses and consumers, too. That’s why innovating for sustainability and traceable sourcing from farm to shelf is more important than ever. It’s not just the right thing to do—it’s a smart business move. Too strongly worded for me comfort - many of our spices don't offer full traceability so don't wa...

Processing

Processing from the ground up

Around the world, agriculture faces significant developmental and environmental challenges. More than ever, consumers know their choices matter. Products with a net positive impact for people, the planet and the soil beneath us are in high demand.

We know that those products are best produced when the farmers and communities behind them are supported. It all starts with them.

That’s why ofi works constantly to support growers, families and people at the heart of our ingredients. Because without them, none of those would be possible.

A solution for all

Supply chain

Sustainability beyond borders

Where we grow our crops, we have complete control. We apply international standards and advanced technology to maintain the highest quality of sustainability.

But the vast majority of the crops we buy are grown by smallholders in fragmented supply chains. While we know that this supports local communities, it can make traceability more challenging. This is how we take sustainability to those hard-to-reach places to influence our third-party supply chains for the better:

Supplier responsibility standards

Our Supplier Code is a detailed set of conditions that our suppliers must meet. These conditions are the basis for producing ingredients in a way that’s socially responsible, economically profitable and environmentally sustainable.

Supporting smallholds

Working closely with smallholder farmers, we run sustainability programs covering subjects such as improving yields and quality, diversifying crops to increase income, improving health and education and much more (see our Priority Areas).

Producing the most sustainable onion in the world

Our dried onion program dates back to 1943. Our agricultural team has unparalleled expertise in the industry, boasting a combined 470 years of experience overseeing all aspects of seed breeding, planting, cultivation and harvest.[AP1]

The team has developed proprietary seeds to produce onions with more dry matter. What does that mean? Boosted yields and less land, water, fertilizer and pesticides needed per acre. We have also developed our own custom planting and harvesting equipment, which has significantly reduced our carbon footprint. This combination of superior seed, expertise and reduced inputs provides our farmers with a high yielding and virtually risk-free crop.

The sustainability impacts of our efficient onion extend beyond the farmgate. Both shipping and processing are more efficient, reducing our environmental footprint. Our onions are dried down in the field, requiring fewer trucks for transportation and less energy and water for processing.

IMPACT

Over the past 10 years we have seen an estimated reduction of:

  • 7,982 acres of production (3,214 hectares)

  • 7.2 billion gallons of water (26.9 million cubic meters or 21,842-acre feet of water)

  • 54,847 metric tons of CO2

Supply chain excellence through technology

We're using leading platforms to build smarter, more transparent supply chains. It’s all about the power of information for good.

  • Track and Trace system

Combines data from our digital apps and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, allowing us to trace products from farm to customer. That means clear visibility across the entire supply chain to meetEuropean Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) compliance.

  • ofi Direct, a mobile app for farmers

This makes it easy for them to deal directly with us and gives them more control over their sales and earnings. It also offers access to advice, financing and supplies, as well as the ability for us to digitally trace crops back to them.

  • OFIS

The Olam Farm Information System, OFIS, helps our field teams gather, process and analyze data around farmers and the first mile of the supply chain to bridge any gaps in isolated rural communities. The data includes farm GPS locations, yields, and information about communities like the nearest schools.

And then? We turn the vast data from our entire supply chain into actionable insights and verified traceability. And it’s all accessible to customers through our sustainable sourcing solution, AtSource.
